1. Make a pattern for your house with cardboard. You can make the house look any way you want, but a standard house has two walls with peaks, two flat side walls and two roof pieces. Your chimney will be one piece shorter than the other, and the two side pieces will be angled. You will only need one pattern piece per different wall or chimney.

2. Roll out your dough on a piece of wax paper covered with a dusting of flour. Dust the top with flour, and roll out to 1/4 inch thick. Use a sharp knife to cut out all the pieces you need to make your house. You can cut out for a door and window or use decoration to form them later. Place them on a cookie sheet, and bake at 350 degrees. Take your smaller pieces out in about 6 or 7 minutes and the larger ones at 10 to 11 minutes. When the edges start to darken, they are done. Place your pieces on a wire rack, and let them cool. The pieces need to be completely cooled off and hard, you may want to wait until the following day to put them together.

3. Cover a tray with foil and start to build your house. Put icing on the tray where you are going to put your house. It doesn't have to be just at the bottom of the pieces--put it all over so the pieces will stick in it. Fill a pastry bag with white icing. If you don't have a pastry bag, use a plastic sandwich bag and cut the corner off at an angle. Squeeze the icing onto one side of a wall, and stand it up in the icing on the tray. Put the next wall in the icing on the first wall, and work your way around, gluing all the wall together with the icing. Now put the icing on the top of the walls, and put on half of your roof. Put icing on the peak of the roof, and put on the other half. Go over your joints again with icing, making sure they will stay together. Put your chimney together with icing, and stick on the roof.

4. Cut rounded-edge crackers in half, put icing on the backs, and place them on the roof for shingles, starting at the bottom of the roof. Press down lightly so you don't cave in the roof. Put more icing at the top where the flat edges join. Use your icing to put on the candies and decorate. A common gingerbread house has gum drops around the edges of the roof and icing around the doors and windows. You can use candy canes to highlight your door or run a bead of small candies around it. Try to get some icing to hang off the corner of the roof to look like ice. Be creative and have fun with it.

5. Crush Oreo cookies until they are really small pieces. Mix the crushed cookies in with the chocolate icing, and place around the outside of the house. Use the white icing to make snow drifts against one side of the house. Put some Christmas tree lolly pops in the yard by cutting their sticks down and sticking them in the yard mixture. You may be surprised what you find hiding under paint or varnish on a piece of furniture. It could be beautiful wood that you can stain and seal, or you may want to leave it natural by simply sealing it. Once you have the vision for your project, gather your materials and put on your gloves. You will soon have a beautiful piece that looks like new.

1. Decide if it is a good piece to refinish. Make sure the piece of furniture you want to work on is structurally sound and doesn't have too many coats of paint on it. If you believe the piece to be an antique, do not refinish it yourself. Take it to a professional that works on antiques because sometimes refinishing these pieces will devalue them. Good older wood that is not in too bad of shape is what you want.

2. Strip off the old finish. Use a gel or thick stripper because it's easier to handle, especially if you are a beginner. Get the kind that says it cleans up with water, or no clean up. Make sure your work area is well ventilated and you cover the floor under and around your project. Apply with a brush and work in the direction of the grain. Do it in sections if it is a large piece.

3. Sand your wood. Sand off any areas that didn't strip completely off with 120 grit sandpaper. Then sand the entire piece with 220 grit sandpaper. Make sure you sand with the grain of the wood. Finish off with a finishing sander, staying with the grain until you get a nice smooth surface. Go over it with tack cloth to remove any leftover dust from the sanding. Make sure you get it all or it can ruin your new finish.

4. Apply sanding sealer. If you are leaving the wood natural, you will want to right to Step 6. If you are going to stain, you should first apply a coat of sanding sealer. Apply a coat, let it soak in for a few minutes and then take one of your rags. Wipe it off. This will keep your stain more even as it soaks into the wood. Sand with your 120 grit paper and clean off the dust.

5. Stain your project. There are a few types of stain, but the easiest to use and to clean up is a water-based stain. Most are applied with a natural end paint brush and wiped off with a soft clean rag. Leaving the stain sit a little longer or doing more coats will make you color darker. Try it on an underside to see the shade you like. Follow the manufacturers time on drying before applying the polyurethane.

6. Coat with Polyurethane. Apply the polyurethane with a brush. Stay with the grain and do longer strokes. Once it is covered, let it dry and sand with the 220 grit paper. Clean off the dust well and apply again. You can do as many coats as you want to get your desired finish. It's much better to do a few thin coats than one thick one. You'll have a much smoother, clearer finish.

8. Pick an area on the furniture, dip cloth and rub suds on.

9. Dirt will begin to appear in suds as they work. Use a scraper to scrape suds away.

10. Rinse area with a damp cloth.

11. Repeat steps 8 through 10 on other areas of furniture, allowing for overlap of areas during cleaning.

12. Allow to dry overnight, preferably with an electric fan blowing on furniture.

2. Remove the handle from the shower faucet. If the handle has a cover plate on the top, pry it off with a flat-head screwdriver. Remove the screw in the middle of the handle with a Phillips-head screwdriver to pull the handle off the faucet. Other types of handles have a set screw on the side of the handle; remove this with an Allen wrench to pull the handle off the faucet.

3. Turn the screws that secure the cover plate to the wall counterclockwise with a Phillips-head screwdriver. Pull the cover plate away from the wall. Some shower faucets use a bonnet nut to secure a sleeve over the cartridge. Remove the bonnet nut with a pair of channel-lock pliers and pull the sleeve away from the cartridge.

4. Remove the retaining pin that secures the cartridge to the cartridge housing with a pair of needle-nose pliers and pull the cartridge out of the faucet plumbing body. The pin is an open-end clip that resembles a long, narrow staple.
